Surface preparation
It is just as important to properly prepare the walls that will receive the wallpaper as the laying itself. That's why I take the time to explain the steps to follow.
#1 Clean your walls
You must thoroughly clean your walls and surfaces with a good degreaser such as TSP. Read the instructions of the used product carefully so as not to leave any unwanted deposits on your surfaces that could harm the final result.
#2 Make the repairs
You need to repair the various imperfections on your walls and all the surfaces that will receive wallpaper, such as nail holes and cracks, and you also need to remove old wallpapers that are peeling off even if only slightly.
#3 Apply a primer
If your walls are new or never received wallpaper in the past, I strongly suggest you apply a coat of odorless oil-based primer. This will help protect your walls and facilitate its removal when you will want to strip it off.
How to remove old wallpapers?
Some wallpapers are easier to remove than others. In some cases, an electric steam "stripper" can work very well, but in other cases, you will need to use a wallpaper stripping agent. Here are the steps to take off wallpaper with a stripping product.
#1 Protect your surfaces
First you must protect your other adjacent surfaces, such as your woodwork, your floors and others using tarpaulins (plasticized canvas) and paint tape.
#2 Remove the peelable parts
You must remove the parts of the wallpaper that are peeling slightly. You can simply use your hands to do this part of the job.
#3 Apply a stripping product
Apply a thick layer of cleaner to the surface using a wallpaper applicator. You can use 3M ™ Gel Remover. Leave on for about 25 minutes or as directed by the product used. If the stripper has had time to dry, apply a new coat.
* For hard-to-reach areas, small areas or curbs, you can use 3M ™ Remover Spray.
#4 Remove the wallpaper
The wallpaper now softened, it can be removed using a putty knife. If there is still glue on the wall, moisten the surface again by adding some stripping product to dissolve the glue and scrape.
#5 Clean and rinse your surfaces
Clean your walls using a pad or sponge for wallpaper. Rinse the wall with a sponge soaked in clear water and let the surface dry completely.
#6 Make the necessary repairs
It is now time to make the necessary repairs. Fill nail and screw holes and cracks with the right product designed for this purpose. After that, you can apply a coat of odorless oil-based primer if you wish.
